26TH ANNUAL CLARETIAN ALUMNI REUNION

Our 2012 Reunion at Dominguez begins at 10:00 on Saturday, August 18th. Father Rosendo Urrabazo, our provincial superior, will preach and report on the Congregation in the USA and around the world at the 11:00 mass. Contact Henry Olivares (909-923-7556) for more information.

Last year we had a great time! That Reunion fell on a fitting day— August 13th—the feast of the Martyred Seminary of Barbastro. Those 51 young Claretian martyrs were outnumbered by the 81 of us who gathered with spouses and family, and the priests and Brothers living on site:

Father Steve Sherwood, who teaches scripture and Hebrew at Oblate College in San Antonio, preached that day. Deacon Gonzalo Martinez, of the Spokane cathedral, assisted at the altar. And Father Kevin Manion, who is currently organizing Father Aloysius’s papers, concelebrated with them.

After a nostalgic mass in the old seminary chapel, we surprised ourselves again as we continued recognizing more and more faces during the BBQ out on the shaded lawn near the swimming pool. Old memories were stirred, and stories piled up.

Sherwood, Martinez, Bob Garretson and Javan Wygal, of the Class of 1961, marked their 50th high school graduation. Friends and classmates lingered on into the late afternoon, even as latecomers continued to arrive. Many new folks show up for the event year by year. Some begin taking charge of things.

The 2011 reunion raised $3,744 for the installation of automatic doors at each end of the veranda, and other improvements, for the benefit of senior Claretians living at Dominguez.

Throughout the year in Los Angeles you may join others every second Saturday of the month for breakfast at Marie Callender’s in Rolland Heights near the City of Industry. And in Phoenix, John Fessler (602-956-7869) and Jim Springer can tell you what Claretian alumni are up to there.
