Fr. Carl Quebedeaux, C.M.F.
receives Angelina Marquez
Award Father Carl
Quebedeaux, C.M.F. was presented the Angelina Marquez Award at the
Hilton Chicago on July 23rd in recognition of his exceptional
service to Hispanic ministry.
In Chicago Fr. Carl has served as a
co-director and director of Casa Claret, and as
vocations director from 1995-2006. He served in Guatemala among
the Maya-Q’eqchi from 1979-1988 working in the formation of lay
leaders. He currently serves as pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Fr.
Carl has been instrumental in support of immigrants and immigrant
workers and leadership formation through such efforts as the Centro
de Trabajadores, Immigrant Workers Project, Pastoral Migratoria and
the Claretian Biblical Animation Team.
“I am grateful for the many people
who have been examples of hope and courage,” says Fr. Carl. “I have
been blessed walking and accompanying people in their journey in the
development of leaders with an option for those most in need.”

L.A. Times in celebration of 100th

magazine celebrates 75th
anniversary This year
marks the 75th anniversary of U.S. Catholic magazine. Fr. James
Tort, C.M.F. started this venture in 1935 as The Voice of St.
Jude. Read

Street renamed in honor of
Claretian advocate for immigrant
rights Father
Luis Olivares, C.M.F., who was the presiding pastor at La Placita,
across from Olvera Street, in the 1980s, was recognized with a
street named after him in the Placita neighborhood on May 20, 2010.
Father Olivares served the poorest of the poor with great commitment
and courage. With the guiding influence of Cesar Chavez, Father
Olivares became a strong voice for the immigrant. His legacy was
celebrated on the same day that the Claretians celebrated their
100th anniversary at La Placita.
Villa Guadalupe part of
University of Chicago
study A University of
Illinois at Chicago study is aiming to assess whether a little salsa
instruction might improve overall health, giving a boost to
everything from fitness to brain function, for older Hispanic women
and men. Read

Claretians commemorate the 40th anniversary
of the closing of St. Jude Seminary Father
Mark Brummel, C.M.F. was the main celebrant at the 40th Anniversary
reunion of St. Jude Seminary in Momence. The concelebrants for the
Mass were Father Ted Cirone, Father Tom Moran, and Father Jim
Fischer. The Claretians held a special remembrance for Father
Richard White, who spent many months preparing the event but passed
away beforehand, on June 4th.
There were approximately 100
attendees, alumni and family, covering graduating classes from
1945-1970. The alumni gathered for lunch at the Bennett-Curtis House
in Grant Park, Illinois and shared memories of the “good old days.”
Malachy McCarthy provided a presentation of photos. The alumni also
took up a collection of $1200 for the Brothers of the Good Shepherd.
The Brothers celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Good Shepherd Manor
later this year.
Claretians submit application to the
United Nations as a “Non-Governmental
Organization” At the request of
our General Government we have approached the offices of the United
Nations (New York) which handle the applications of those
organizations interested in becoming members as NGOs
(non-governmental organization) and have been working with
Claretians Arnel Alcober, CMF and Tom Joyce, CMF in completing the
application process and gathering all of the supporting
documentation that needs to be submitted along with the application.
We will be sending all of our documents to the UN for consideration
when their committee meets next in October.
San Hippoito Parish in Mexico
City featured in New York
Times The New
York Times recently featured an article on the mixing of
religion and the drug culture in Mexico. It describes the work of
our Claretian parish in Mexico City -- San Hippoito -- and St. Jude
devotion to wean young drug addicts from their habits. Read

Nun who offers food and
social services at Casa Catalina pantry featured in Chicago
Tribune Sister
Joellen Tumas runs Casa Catalina, a food pantry in the Back of the
Yards neighborhood of Chicago. “When you minister to the hungry,
it's not just about food,” she said. “Children lose their parents.
People get evicted. Families get their gas cut off.” Read

Barbastro House moves to new
address Barbastro House
and its residents have moved into the building formerly known as
Casa Claret at 3525 South Hermitage Avenue in Chicago. The new
telephone number is (773) 801-0077. With the merging of the two
houses, Casa Claret ceases to exist.

Hurlock honored with 2010 Green
Award Executive Director
of Claretian Associates, Angela Hurlock, was recently honored by
Chicago Magazine with a 2010 Green Award. Read

Back-of-the-Yards camp to
keep kids off streets featured in Catholic New
World Funded by a
state Teen Reach grant, the camp is for students who attend schools
in Holy Cross/IHM’s Back of the Yards neighborhood, and is an
outgrowth of the parish’s afterschool program. Read
